How long a coil lasts
Most people get one to two weeks from a coil or a pod with a built-in coil. Some go longer; heavy vapers or anyone using thick, sweet e-liquid may need a new one every few days.
What wears a coil out
- Sweet, dark e-liquid. Sweeteners caramelize on the coil and gunk it up fastest.
- High wattage. Running a coil above its rated range burns the wick.
- Dry hits. Firing with a dry or low tank scorches the cotton.
- Chain vaping. The wick needs a moment to re-soak between puffs.
When to change your coil
- A burnt or harsh taste
- Flavor that is muted or "off"
- Gurgling or spitting
- Less vapor at the same setting
- Leaking from the base of the tank or pod
Why does a new coil taste burnt?
Usually because it was not primed. A new coil's cotton needs to be fully soaked before you fire it. Fill the tank, drip a few drops into the coil's wicking holes, and wait five to ten minutes. Then start at the low end of the wattage printed on the coil.
Will one dry hit ruin a coil?
Often, yes. A single dry hit can scorch the wick, and that burnt taste does not go away.
Make each coil last longer
- Prime every new coil.
- Stay within the wattage range printed on the coil.
- Keep the tank above the wicking holes.
- Give it a second between puffs.
- Try a lighter e-liquid if coils die fast.
Not sure if it is the coil or the device? Bring it into any Cloud 9 store and staff will check it. As one Semmes customer put it: "I had a bad coil, they troubleshot it and it was bad."
Vape coil questions
How often should I change my vape coil?
Most coils last one to two weeks. Change it when the flavor turns burnt or muted, or the device gurgles or leaks.
How many puffs do you get from a coil?
It varies too much by device, wattage and e-liquid to give one number. Taste is the best guide.
Will one dry hit ruin a coil?
Often, yes. A dry hit can scorch the wick for good.
