The short answer

Yes, you can bring a vape on a plane in the U.S., but only in your carry-on or on your person. Vapes and e-cigarettes are banned from checked bags because of their lithium batteries.

TSA and FAA vape rules

  • Carry-on only. The FAA bans e-cigarettes and vaping devices from checked baggage. If a gate agent checks your carry-on at the gate, take the vape out first.
  • No vaping on board. Using an e-cigarette on a U.S. flight is prohibited by federal regulation.
  • No charging on board. Do not charge the device or its batteries during the flight.
  • E-liquid follows the liquids rule. Bottles must be 3.4oz (100ml) or less and fit in your one quart-size liquids bag.
  • Spare batteries carry-on only, with each one in a case or with the terminals covered so they cannot short.

How to pack a vape for a flight

  1. Turn the device off or lock it so it cannot fire in your bag.
  2. Empty or remove the tank or pod, or keep it upright. Cabin pressure changes can push liquid out of a full tank.
  3. Put e-liquid bottles in your quart bag.
  4. Put spare 18650 or 21700 batteries in a plastic battery case.
  5. Keep it all in your carry-on, not a bag that might get gate-checked.

Will TSA take my vape?

Not if it is packed as above. TSA officers have the final say at the checkpoint, and a device found in a checked bag will be removed.

Check where you are landing

U.S. rules cover the flight. Some countries ban vapes or e-liquid entirely, and some U.S. states restrict which products can be sold. Check the law at your destination before you pack.
